“People who write and read history have gotten used to
seeing terrible things such as conquest and murder as the price of progress.”
Painting by: Felix Parra
This quote from this week’s readings really stuck with
me. I think we are taught history, or at
least I was in my elementary school years, in a way that does not represent
what truly happened and it is very one sided.
I went to school for my early elementary years in Mexico, and this is
also true for what I learned there. I
have embedded a drawing of the “Matanza de Cholula” or “the Cholula Massacre” by Hernan
Cortez a "conquistador". This was also very criticized years
later by Bartolome de las Casas as being unnecessary and merciless. As future teachers, we need
to start teaching our students that everyone played an important role in the
past, and that it is very important to honor every party involved without making excuses for any side or embellishing what happened.
