Entry Week 1

The chapter of Black Ants and Buddhists was very interesting to me especially on the page where the author describes different points of what multicultural education is or what it should look like in the classroom.  I really love TED talks, and I feel like there is a TED talk for anything out there. This is one that really connected my reading with.  The part where she says that "teachers' life histories affect how they act with their students" is so true.  A lot of teachers, several that I have seen in observations, have preconceived biases and stereotypes.  I am sure that if I dig deep, I can come up with some of my own.  Creating a classroom environment where all your students are excited to learn is checking those biases at the door and treating all your students fairly.  Starting at 9:40 in the video, I like when she mentions that these conversations should be uncomfortable.  Hopefully with those uncomfortable feelings, we can all id...

Entry Week 2

After reading Teaching What Really Happened, I connected the readings with something my daughter told me about her Social Studies 5 th grade class last year at New Caney ISD.   She said that they actually had textbooks, but her teacher opted for not using them frequently, they instead did research and learned important material from him.   I found this interesting since I had already learned through UH classes of some of the issues with textbooks.   I started reading different articles and opinions online because as a future teacher, I want to make sure that when I teach I honor everyone involved. The New York Times - Texas mother teaches...   I have linked an article I came across that time, which coincidentally ends up being of a mom from Houston.   Interesting enough, the mother is Dr. Dean-Burren who happened to be my professor a couple of semesters back at UH in the Survey Literature course. I did not know it was her when I first read th...

Entry Week 3

I decided to include this video as my media because one of my readings included a reference to it and upon looking it up I really connected it and felt like it brought the two readings together.  It did not only bring the readings together and connected them for me, but I also felt like it connected with today’s world and events.  I think in today’s time I have felt the hatred of many towards not only my ethnicity but other races.  Everything is publicized, and children are immediately connected.  I think that as future teachers and parents, education for our children and students and making sure they are knowledgeable about everything that has happened in past without omitting details as bad as they might be, will ensure that we move forward and become a country that is not divided.    From knowledge comes awareness and understanding, and hopefully what we get from that is acceptance.
